The BDA staged the second annual Brisbane Awards presented by FKP Property Group on Saturday 8 November at the State Library of Queensland.

The award, designed to celebrate the contributions of individuals and organisations in creating a better Brisbane, was presented to Steve Wilson Chairman of South Bank Corporation and Executive Chairman of Wilson HTM Investment Group. The BDA honoured Steve Wilson for his extraordinary contribution to Brisbane's urban fabric and economic and social well-being. Specifically, Steve was recognised for his involvement in several significant public projects including the redevelopment of South Bank, the development of the highly successful Goodwill Bridge, preservation of Queensland's Maritime Museum, the completion of St John's Cathedral, and the activation of the Brisbane River.

Steve was acknowledged as a tireless and persuasive advocate of strong urban design and community development practices in Brisbane city.

200 BDA members and Brisbane design and business leaders attended the gala dinner which also featured:

  • Special guest speaker Sally-Anne Atkinson
  • Entertainment by Skill @ Will dance group
  • Queensland-inspired five-course degustation menu
  • Steve Wilson's Barambah wines

The Brisbane Awards are presented annually. There may be one to two awards presented each year. The awards are for an individual or organisation's outstanding contribution to the urban fabric of the city of Brisbane. The contribution may be through the provision of a place or an individual's contribution. While the place needs to be a recent addition, the individual contribution could be for a body of work or a long-term contribution to the city.

BRISBANE AWARDS CITATION

Awarded to Steve Wilson

Steve Wilson has made an enormous contribution to urban design in Brisbane through his work at South Bank as chair of the South Bank Corporation.

His continuing involvement with South Bank serves to remind us that successful projects such as these are not possible without strong and decisive leadership. It took initiative and courage to abandon the previous master plan and to rethink South Bank. Steve and his Board persuaded the Government to start again.

Steve has always championed good design and has ensured that South Bank has been well advised by the architectural and urban design professions. The result speaks for itself. South Bank has evolved to become a dynamic mixed use urban precinct and one of Australia's great public places. Through his leadership, Steve has achieved an urban focus for South Bank that sets a standard for River cities in Australia and around the world.

Steve's leadership of the South Bank Corporation has had a lasting influence on the city of Brisbane. He has also been instrumental with other significant public projects including the highly successful Goodwill Bridge, preservation of Queensland's Maritime Museum, the completion of St John's Cathedral the last gothic style cathedral in the world to be completed and the activation of Brisbane River.

Steve is a tireless and persuasive advocate of strong urban design and community development practices in Brisbane city.

Steve Wilson's selection for the Brisbane Award reflects his extraordinary contribution to Brisbane's urban fabric and economic and social well-being.

Steve Wilson is a deserved winner of the 2008 Brisbane Award presented by FKP Property Group.
